Phoenix Air pollution Facts
Welcome to SavePhoenix.org
We are an environmental organization with an economic conscience.  Our goal is to improve quality of life around the United States by reducing air pollution with community involvement and sensible, realistic policies.  We are not interested in draconian measures that will help our environment but hurt individuals and businesses in the process.

Phoenix and it's metropolitan area is a beautiful, growing city with something to offer everyone who lives here.  With a population of around 4 million, it currently stands as the 14th largest metropolitan area in the United States.   The population of the Phoenix area increased by 45% from 1990 through 2000, compared to the average United States rate of 15%, making it the fastest growing city in the country.  While population growth is great for a city, it has left Phoenix with some environmental pollution problems that must be dealt with.

Arizona was once known around the world for it's clean air, and was in fact an international destination for those looking to cure ailments ranging from asthma to tuberculosis.  However, since the population growth of the 80s and 90s, Phoenix has developed a major air pollution problem, known as "The Brown Cloud."  The Brown Cloud can be seen by just about anyone in Phoenix looking towards the horizon.   The Brown Cloud is composed of tiny particles of carbon and nitrogen dioxide gas, which become airborne mainly through the burning of fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal).

While other major cities around the country have similar air emissions to Phoenix without the accompanying polluted air, the unique location and weather conditions of Phoenix trap pollution in the air. At night, a layer of air forms over the valley.  As with any desert, the ground air cools faster than the upper layer of air.  Unlike most deserts, however, cool air moves in on top of the warm air from the surrounding mountains.  As a result, the air trapped closer to the ground (containing the majority of the pollutants) is forced to spread.  As the desert floor heats up, the particulates form a visible smog that expands as the day progresses.

If you live in Phoenix, every time you walk outside you are walking into dirty, polluted air.  The air is so polluted that you can see it everywhere you look.  Polluted air is bad for our bodies, our skin, and our children.  No one wants polluted air, so lets do something about it.

Phoenix suffers from all sorts of environmental pollution issues.  Although we have 3 rivers running into our city, we won't have unlimited water forever.  Our residents can save water in the bathroom, shower, at the kitchen sink, and in the yard.  Our major pollution issues are Air pollution (car pollution), water pollution (river pollution), land pollution, even indoor air pollution.  Some can be fixed easily, some can be fixed at a price, and some can't be fixed at all.  We are here to help identify which can be dealt with and what you can do to help.

Like most environmentalists, we are dog lovers, too, and we'd like to invite you to check out Phoenix Dog Walking and Pet Sitting.
